Auld Lang Syne

I have always wondered what the words were to this song, and what it's true meaning was. So I went to one of my favorite websites, Wikipedia, and did a little research. Here is what I found out. For one thing, this song is a lot older than I ever thought it was!

Auld Lang Syne is a Scottish poem written by a man named Robert Burns in 1788. It was set to the tune of a traditional folk song. The title can be meant to say "old long since" , "long long ago" or "days gone by". The first verse actually bears a strong resemblance to another poem written in 1711, but the rest of the poem appears to have been written by Burns. Although back in the day, they wrote down old songs sung by men in pubs that were traditional folk songs passed down through the ages and then just took credit for it.

Here are the Scottish lyrics and then the English version.

Scottish Version.....

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,And never brought to mind ?Should auld acquaintance be forgot,And days o' lang syne ?
CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my jo,
For auld lang syne,
We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp !And surely I’ll be mine !And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,For auld lang syne.
CHORUS
We twa hae run about the braes,And pu’d the gowans fine ;But we’ve wander’d mony a weary foot,Sin auld lang syne.
CHORUS
We twa hae paidl’d i' the burn,Frae morning sun till dine ;But seas between us braid hae roar’dSin auld lang syne.
CHORUS
And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere !And gie's a hand o’ thine !And we’ll tak a right gude-willy waught,For auld lang syne.
CHORUS

English Version....

Should old acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind ?Should old acquaintance be forgot, and old times since ?
CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we'll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
And surely you’ll buy your pint cup !And surely I’ll buy mine !And we'll take a cup o’ kindness yet,for auld lang syne.
CHORUS
We two have run about the slopes, and picked the daisies fine ;But we’ve wandered many a weary foot, since auld lang syne.
CHORUS
We two have paddled in the stream, from morning sun till dine† ;But seas between us broad have roared since auld lang syne.
CHORUS
And there’s a hand my trusty friend !And give us a hand o’ thine !And we’ll take a right good-will draught, for auld lang syne.
CHORUS

HAPPY NEW YEAR'S EVE!!!
I will clink my glass of champagne to you all tonight!
I hope that you will all have a wonderful and prosperous year in 2009!
Thank you Barb as always for creating these wonderful blogs! I so enjoy reading them and viewing your photos that you choose to share with us. You are all wonderful people and I am very glad and appreciative to know you even if it's only here in cyber space! I know that in real life I would enjoy knowing you just as much as i do on here.
I just had a chance to read yesterday's blog. Great blog Barb. you are a very wise soul!
I was shredded during the year 2008 over and over and so was my lil Pekingese. Shredding a lil dog is lower than low so for anyone who has a mind that far bent all I can do is pray for them and pray that they get what ever professional help it is that they need. However I am so done with turning the other cheek so to speak. Toxic people can just "bite me". LOL. I am giving and kind and I only understand one way to be in life which is just that. I would never want to have a negative side because it's just to stressful and there's a lot more fun to be had by being a nice person. :0)

I think I heard my favorite version in the movie P.S. I Love You :) I'm assuming it was either the Scottish version, or an Irish version :)

My bro, sil and niece are coming over tonight and the boys are gonna cook out. SIL is probably gonna chill on the couch as usual and Kaitlyn, my niece, will probably run a muck :) Mom and I need to pack because we, my grandparents and my aunt are going on a quick trip to Austin to visit my aunt Susan and my lil cousin, Jahsenta and probably my other aunt, uncle and cousin who live there. I'm hoping to get to see Jeremy at least on Thursday night... he's off from work but I don't know if my mom will be too happy with that...I am thinking that when we're done with whatever we're doing for that day that there will be no reason why, I mean if I'm going to be sitting in a hotel room then I could be with Jeremy for a few hours. I haven't seen him since September 6!

Well I hope everyone has a great New Year's Eve... stay safe!

HAPPY NEW YEARS EVE DREAMA AND ADRI AND ANYONE WHO HAPPENS TO READ THIS!

Tonight we are going to some friends house. Looking forward to it! We have great fun with these people. Most of our recent New Years Eves were spent at hockey games counting down the NY New Years and then coming home and sitting in the hot tub to watch neighbors shoot off fireworks. Or I would just lay in bed and hear the fireworks boom as I also listened to Robert snore! LOL! So this year will be good times had by all!
Dreama....I think you need to do some shredding yourself and just be done with it all!
Adri....I think you should try to see your boyfriend. Just explain to your parents that you have not seen him since September and you need to know if you two still have a relationship worth working on. I know that you know you do, but it makes the parent think that you are still trying to figure the whole thing out. They should have enough respect for you to let you go and figure these things out for yourself. Good luck honey....

word:unspe LOL! Lets use the word "unspe" in a sentence..

As the sweaty, overweight, much to hairy man tried to lift his end of the couch, he held his breath and then with all his might he lifted and suddenly an unspe escaped from him. Very soon the smell was noticed by all.

Hey Barb! Happy New Year to you and all the bloggers here. Hope you have fun at your friends' home. We are going bowling with the kids, then we will come home and have a little celebration here with the kids. I got a bottle of sparkling juice which they get to drink in champagne glasses. I have little pop-its which are those paper wads that pop when you throw them at the ground. I will post a photo after 9PM when NYC drops the ball.

I might make fondue tonight too... not sure because I don't want the kids to snack on chocolate all night. But heck, we only ring in 2009 once, right?

I look forward to seeing what the new year offers us, especially after January 20th. ;o)

Here's to many Hatchlings in 2009. Much love and peace to all!

word: bringet

Sentence~A new start and plenty of change... I say bringet on!

I just woke up from a nice little nap. You know how we old folk have to take naps to get ready for a big event. Like staying up late! I fell all refreshed and ready to party! My friend will have all kinds of yummy things to eat and tons of wine to drink! But we will be careful for the drive home.
G....I think bowling and ringing in the New Year with the kidlins sounds wonderful. We used to try to go bowling on Christmas day, but with the weather being so poopie this year we did not even suggest it. And we are doing fondue tomorrow! Both cheese and chocolate. Katie's Timmy is coming over early so that we can watch the Winter Classic hockey game and then when Katie gets off work at 1pm we will make fondue. mmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!!
LOL! What better way to start the New Year then with hockey and cheese and chocolate!!!! May be to add some wine in there too~

LOL at your sentence G!

word: untsmac
sentence: If you don't have a Happy New Year, I will seriously untsmac you upside the head!
